Maths

We use the Mastery approach to teach Maths at St James’ VA Primary, which follows the 5 Big Ideas.

We use the White Rose scheme for Maths, which plans for small steps to ensure children are secure with concepts before progressing.

By using the Mastery approach for Maths we are ensuring children are not only fluent with Maths facts but they are also able to apply this knowledge to reasoning and problem solving tasks.

For a full overview of what your child will be taught in each year group, please visit the government website. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/national-curriculum-in-england-mathematics-programmes-of-study/national-curriculum-in-england-mathematics-programmes-of-study#key-stage-1---years-1-and-2

At Home

Children will use manipulatives in lessons. This website https://mathsbot.com/manipulativeMenu has interactive versions of some of the resources we use. E.g. dienes, numicon, number lines and rekenreks.

Maths Games and Activities to use at home - play again and again to increase 'number fitness'.

All children in the school have access to Mathletics, which allows them to complete tasks and challenges online.
